Cellular Phones

Benefits of having Cellular communications:airtouch.gif (15148 bytes)

  1. Cell phones can provide a quick direct link into the "911" EMS system if there is an emergency.
  2. By using cellular phones Venturing & Varsity Scouts learn how to use cellular phones effectively and how cellular technology works.
  3. The engineering groups of cellular companies that choose to help and participate with On Target can learn more there cellular coverage areas and where there are holes in coverage.

In the past Air Touch Cellular has temporarily donated the use of 20 analog cell phones for use during On Target by teams in Utah! We will be sending out letters to Air Touch Cellular as well as other cellular companies throughout the west to see if they would be interested in supporting On Target this year by donating loaner phones, free air time during the Operation On Target event, or by financial or other support. Any loaner phones that are made available be allotted to the first teams that register for a peak (especially a key peak). Even if you have arranged for an Amateur Radio operator to provide communications for your team, it is always a good idea to have another means of communication.

We would like to see as many teams possible with cell phone capability so please make arrangements to have one available for use by your team. As the Scout Motto says "BE PREPARED!", so try to arrange to bring someone along who has a cell phone and BE SURE TO REGISTER THE TELEPHONE NUMBER OF THE CELL PHONE YOU WILL BE USING along with the peak you will be on.

We will be posting a list of cell phone numbers of the participating teams on the peaks registry page. Use these numbers to communicate with teams as the mirror signals flash and for emergency purposes.
